With its strategic location in the magnificent Alps of the South Island, the Wanaka region is indeed a beauty to behold. One of its outstanding endowments is the Lake Wanaka which covers an area of 192 km2 (74 sq mi), an altitude of 278 metres and depth of 300m (980ft). Known as the fourth largest lake in New Zealand, the Lake derives its origin from Oanaka, a Maori name which means ‘the place of Anaka’.

Lying at the heart of the Otago Lakes, the lake runs through a U-Shaped Valley believed to have been formed by glacial erosion in the ice age era approximately 10,000 years ago. It serves as a main source to the Clutha River and its being fed by River Makarora and Matukituki. The towns surrounding the lake are characterized by glacier carved basins from the Lake’s shores which directly lead to Mt. Aspiring National Park. From the frontier town of Makarora to Lake Wanaka is barely a 15 minutes drive; it is bordered by the historic Cardrona Valley on the South which points to the route leading to Queenstown.

The climate around Lake Wanaka can be tricky since the region has four distinct seasons; the winters can be crispy and cool which can be perfect for snowboarders and skiers because of its wide ski area. Spring can be great for trailers and lakeside track lovers as they can fully explore with ease. For nature lovers and photographers, autumn is a perfect season because of the vibrant colours it brings to the environment. For those engaged in water-sports, bikers and hikers, the summer season is ideal for them as it can be dry and hot.
